Dining with Mushrooms
On Wednesday, October 30th at 6 PM, there will be a three course meal at Future Chef's Cafe in Brooks Secondary School. Vancouver Island University Professional Cook students will celebrate this year's festival by presenting a three course mushroom themed dinner. Enjoy the wonderful flavours, textures, and cooking methods that can be used for a select number of fungi varieties! One glass of wine will be included with the meal. Mushrooms provided by local producer, "All the Mushrooms". Brooks is located at 5400 Marine Avenue, in Powell River. Call for reservations here: #604-483-7967. Cognitive Mycology with Theo Rosenfeld: Cognitive Mycology is the science of fungus intelligence. Evidence of extremely complex adaptive behaviours is emerging from several different streams of mycology research. It is becoming difficult for scientists to describe their research without using the anthropomorphic (or at least animal-centric) language of cognition and intelligence. This talk will provide a tour of some of the most unexpected fungus behaviours as well as some of the theories proposed by mycologists, ecologists, and philosophers to explain these behaviours.
Theo Rosenfeld is the operator of Wildwood Ecology Labs, a flower farm providing farm-to-vase florist services to Powell River and the surrounding area. Currently a student of Dr Elaine Ingham's Soil Foodweb School, Theo plans to use Wildwood Ecology Labs to develop local projects in applied soil ecology research and education. From 2012 to 2017 Theo developed curriculum, mentored student researchers, and taught undergraduate courses as a sessional instructor for UBC's interdisciplinary Cognitive Systems Program. -
New Species Underfoot - Mushroom Barcoding & Citizen Science, with Jason Leane: Compared to many other groups of organisms, mushrooms have been relatively under-studied. Thanks to new techniques in DNA barcoding and related techniques, research in this field has been growing tremendously. Many species of mushrooms in Coastal British Columbia previously thought to match similar-looking species in Europe are turning out to be new species altogether, or to be severely mislabeled.
Jason Leane is a mushroom hobbyist, growing mushrooms locally for food and making contributions to the world of mushrooms through citizen science. His local business is "All the Mushrooms". Come learn what scientists have been missing, and how you can get involved.
